Jerwood New Playwright wins Evening Standard New Playwright Award

24 November 2015

Molly Davies has won Most Promising Playwright at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2015 for God Bless The Child directed by Royal Court Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone. God Bless The Child opened in Jerwood Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court in November 2014, as part of the Royal Court’s Jerwood New Playwrights programme, supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

Diana Nneka Atuona, also a Jerwood New Playwright, was nominated for Most Promising Playwright for Liberian Girl. The winners were announced in a ceremony at the Old Vic theatre.

Jerwood New Playwrights is a longstanding partnership between Jerwood Charitable Foundation and the Royal Court which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2014. Each year, Jerwood New Playwrights supports the production of three new works by emerging writers, all of whom are in the first 10 years of their career. The Royal Court carefully identifies playwrights whose careers would benefit from the challenge and profile of being fully produced either in the Jerwood Downstairs or Jerwood Upstairs Theatres at the Royal Court.

The programme has produced a collection of challenging and outspoken works which explore a variety of new forms and voices. It is rooted in the Royal Court’s desire to create a more sustainable culture for new writers. Jerwood New Playwrights has been instrumental in discovering and supporting some of the most important playwrights of our time, from Sarah Kane to David Greig and Mark Ravenhill to Ayub Khan Din. To date the programme has supported 61 playwrights and 78 new productions to the stage.
