Jerwood Annual Review 2021

13 January 2022

Every year, we produce a joint Annual Review to take stock of the activities of the past 12 months across Jerwood Arts, Jerwood Foundation, Jerwood Collection and Jerwood Space, and take a moment to reflect on the progress we’ve made.

2021 was undoubtedly a year of change and challenge, and in the words of Jerwood Foundation Chairman Alan Grieve CBE, ‘Jerwood has had no choice but to meet these challenges and do its utmost to preserve its course and priorities within its chosen fields.’

You can read the full review here.

At Jerwood Arts, we have reflected on how we responded flexibly and creatively to the changing circumstances of 2021. We continued to be innovative in our grant making through the development of new initiatives such as the 1:1 Fund on the one hand, and in our support to beneficiaries on the other. We’re proud of everything our grantees have achieved under extraordinary circumstances.

The review highlights key moments in our year, including announcing the 33 Live Work Fund awardees for music creators and artists across the performing arts. Each awardee received £20,000 and you can read more about their practices and ambitions here. Another has been delivering the Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries programme, with our partners people make it work, including getting to know the inspirational 51 Fellows taking part in Host organisations across the UK.

In the galleries at Jerwood Space, we were delighted to be able to welcome back our audiences gradually, starting with Jerwood Solo Presentations in May followed by Survey II in the autumn, as well as supporting Survey II opening at g39 in Cardiff and the Jerwood / Photoworks Awards touring to Belfast Exposed.

We have also seen our alumni continue to grow and make their mark: with particularly outstanding achievements for poet and playwright Yomi Ṣode, one of our Jerwood Compton Poetry Fellows 2019-20, and Array Collective, who featured in our exhibition Collaborate! in 2019, winning the prestigious Turner Prize.
