Katy Bentham

Katy Bentham is an artist and writer based in Newcastle upon Tyne working across moving-image, photography, installation and live performance. She recently had a solo exhibition at 36 Gallery, Newcastle and was shortlisted for the 2019 Left Bank Leeds Art Prize. She has contributed writing to MAP Magazine and Corridor8 and in 2018 co-edited Eros in Blue with Sophie Soobramanien, a collection of new writing from the Northeast on the expanded erotic and love as practice.

She is interested in imagining/dismantling models of utopia, conflating buildings and bodies, gender constructs and ways of living together.

Katy’s Jerwood Bursary will enable her to attend garment-construction courses towards the development of a DIY drag persona, and cover her travel expenses and attendance at conferences to research sustainable living practices, regenerative cultures and relevant organisations operating in the Northeast.
