TRINITY: Michael. and Ashley Holmes in conversation

Jerwood Space, 171 Union Street, London, SE1 0LN,
7 Jul 2022, 7-8.30pm

In response to Michael.’s commission cleave to the BLACK for Jerwood/FVU Awards 2022, Michael. invites artist Ashley Holmes who designed the sound for the installation to join him for a conversation.

Michael.’s installation cleave to the BLACK depicts through a moving-image triptych, the continuing legacy of Black male experience. As part of the event Michael. will lead a short physical movement workshop used during the making of cleave to the BLACK, which invites attendees to move in slow motion across the room.

About the Speakers

Michael. is a Black British artist-filmmaker and community worker born and based in London. His work explores the poetics of blackness and being. Michael was formerly known as Michael McLeod and has since dropped his surname due to its historic colonial context.

Ashley Holmes (b. Luton, 1990) is an artist and DJ based in Sheffield. His interdisciplinary practice combines sound, moving image, performance, installation, radio broadcasts and ongoing collaborative projects. Holmes’ recent work is informed by an interest in the value and potential of music as a research methodology that allows us to think relationally within broader social, cultural, and political discourses and reimagine notions of listening, storytelling, collaboration, ownership, place-making and belonging. Ashley currently hosts Tough Matter, a monthly broadcast on NTS Radio, and also facilitates Open Deck – a series of gatherings giving space to collectively listen and hold discursive space around relationships to music, sound and oral histories. ashleyholmes.co.uk
