We are joined by three artists from the Jerwood/FVU Awards to discuss their experience of being selected. Patrick Hough (2017), Guy Oliver (2020) and Reman Sadani (2020) reflect on the application process, the reality of making their proposals into moving-image works and the impact of the award on their own practice. Chaired by Jerwood Arts Director Lilli Geissendorfer, this conversation offers a candid insight for artists who are thinking about applying this year.
What are the Jerwood/FVU Awards 2022?
The Jerwood/FVU Awards 2022 are a major opportunity for UK-based moving-image artists in the first five years of developing their professional practice. They will award two £25,000 commissions for new moving-image works.
Jerwood Arts and Film and Video Umbrella invite early-career artists to make proposals for ambitious new works in any form of the moving-image. Two proposals are selected by a panel consisting of practicing artists and arts programmers/curators, for commission, production, exhibition and tour from November 2020 through to 2022. This edition of the awards launches a new partnership with Leeds Art Gallery who will host the premiere exhibition of the new commissions in January 2022.

Patrick Hough
Patrick Hough (b.1989, Galway, Ireland) is an artist living and working in London. Incorporating moving-image, photography and installation, Hough’s work explores the links between cinema, technology and archaeology. Patrick received his BA in Fine Art Media from NCAD, Dublin in 2011 and his MA in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art, London in 2013. Recent exhibitions include: Objects of Doubt, Danielle Arnaud Gallery, London; Operating Manual For Spaceship Earth, Irish Architecture Archive, Dublin; Nature as Data, Shanghai Sculpture Park, Shanghai; The Medium is the Message, The Library Project, Dublin; Artist Film International, Whitechapel Gallery, London and MAAT, Lisbon; Abracadabra, 6th Moscow Biennial of Young Art, Moscow. Guy Oliver
Guy OIiver (b. 1982, London) lives and works in London. He graduated from the Royal College of Art (MA Painting) in 2015, and his interdisciplinary practice employs moving-image as well as text, digital print, painting, collage and performance. Recent solo exhibitions include And You Thought I Was Bad?, Zabludowicz Collection, London (2018), Live From San Quentin, Random Access Gallery, Syracuse, New York (2018) and Did You Think I’d Leave You Dying?, Chalton Gallery, London (2017). Recent group exhibitions and screenings include The Generation of Choice, Gen En Regalia, New York (2018), Rebel Souls, Daata Editions, Art Rio, Rio De Janeiro (2018), Newstalgia! Reman Sadani
Reman Sadani (b. 1995, Yemen) is an Iraqi artist who lives and works in London. She is a graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art, working across moving-image and writing. Most recently with a loose collective of independent Iraqi filmmakers, Reman toured Malmö, Carthage and Marrakech Film Festivals in a series of development labs.
