We’ve brought together three artists and makers from previous editions of this award to share their experiences. Mark Corfield-Moore (2019 awardee), Jessica Harrison (2017 awardee) and Jasleen Kaur (2015 awardee) reflect on the application process, the reality of making their commissions and the impact of the award on their own practice. Chaired by Jerwood Arts Director Lilli Geissendorfer, this conversation offers a candid insight for artists and makers who are thinking about applying this year.
What is the Jerwood Art Fund Makers Open 2021?
Jerwood Art Fund Makers Open 2021 is a major award for five early-career UK-based artists and makers to develop and present ambitious new works.
The award offers a supported, high-profile national platform for artists and makers who are between one and ten years of beginning their professional artistic practice to take risks at a pivotal moment in their careers. It seeks to raise the profile and visibility of making processes within the visual arts and create a space for critical dialogue between the craft and visual arts sectors.

Mark Corfield-Moore (b. 1988, Bangkok, Thailand) lives and works in London. He graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma from Royal Academy Schools in 2018 and with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2015. Recent exhibitions include Common Thread, New Art Centre, Salisbury, 2020; Reinventing the Future, Plain Gallery, Milan, 2020; Adieu to Old England, The Kids are Alright, Choi & Lager, Cologne, 2019; Out of Office, PADA Studios, Lisbon, 2019; At Your Service (solo exhibition), Wolfson College, Cambridge, 2018. Jessica Harrison (b. 1982, St Bees, England) is an artist based in Edinburgh. She is an academician of the Royal Scottish Academy since 2015 and graduated with a PhD in Sculpture from Edinburgh University in 2013. Recent exhibitions include Found Figurines, solo exhibition at Kunstforum Solothurn, Switzerland, 2019; AWARD, at the British Ceramics Biennial, Spode Works, Stoke-on-Trent, 2019; The Precious Clay: Porcelain in Contemporary Art, Museum of Royal Worcester, Worcester (2018/19). jessicaharrison.studio
Jasleen Kaur (b.1986, Glasgow, Scotland) is an artist based in London. Her work is an ongoing exploration into the malleability of culture and the layering of social histories within the material and immaterial things that surround us. Her practice examines diasporic identity and hierarchies of history, both colonial and personal. She works with sculpture, video, sound and writing. Recent and upcoming commissions include Wellcome Collection, UP Projects, Glasgow Women’s Library, Market Gallery, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Eastside Projects and Hollybush Gardens.
