Magz Hall among nine Jerwood Charitable Foundation friends and alumni shortlisted for The British Composer Awards

This page was made some time ago and may contain information which is now out of date

Sound and radio artist Magz Hall who is currently exhibiting work as part of Jerwood Open Forest (at Jerwood Space until 11 December) has been shortlisted for The British Composer Awards. She joins eight other friends and alumni of Jerwood Charitable Foundation, including Mark Bowden, a British composer of chamber, orchestral and vocal music. We supported Mark with a Small Grant in 2015 to undertake a research onsite at CERN, the site of the Hadron Collider, for a new oratorio commissioned by BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Others include: Luke Bedford, who was part of London Sinfonietta’s Jerwood Series 3 (recording), Jerwood Opera Writing Fellowships and has worked with previously supported company Mahogany Opera Group; Jonathan Dove, a tutor on Jerwood Opera Writing Programme at Aldeburgh Music; Emily Howard who was part of PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music Bienniel in 2012 and also worked with Mahogany Opera Group; Anna Meredith who was part of London Sinfonietta’s Jerwood Series 5 (recording); Claudia Molitor who was part of London Sinfonietta’s Jerwood Series 6 (recording); and Hannaa Tuulikki who participated in a Jerwood Residency at Cove Park in 2014.

The British Composer Awards are unique in making contemporary music, jazz and sonic art the focus of their annual celebration. Created by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) in 2003, the Awards promote the art of composition, recognise the creative talent of composers and sound artists, and bring their music to a wider audience. To qualify works must have been completed within five years of the award period and have received a UK premiere performance – either live or broadcast – in the year leading up to 31 March.  Composers must have been born in the UK or resident for at least 5 years.  Each category is judged by a different jury, with members appointed by BASCA.  The majority of these music professionals are composers working in collaboration with performers, conductors, promoters and festival directors.
