Alicia Reyes McNamara

Alicia Reyes McNamara is a visual artist experimenting with textiles.

As a Mexican-Irish American and culturally mixed person, she is invested in opening up the concept of an in-between space, where identity is fluid and where cultures and their languages intersect.

Alicia has recently been exploring the space where Latinx futurism and the resilience of catholic cultural traditions collide and using this as a sci-fi filter to view the changing identity of the Latinx diaspora and the consequent negotiations of authenticity that surround it.

With support from this Jerwood Bursary, Alicia will experiment with a new method of practice that will culminate in the creation of tufted floor works. She intends to create a textured floor piece for the viewer to sit and become part of a circle. This will be a space for events or a place to gather and share, which will open her practice up to new ways of incorporating and thinking about collaboration.
