Sonic Terrains

Somerset House is London’s working arts centre and home to the UK’s largest creative community. Dedicated to nurturing creativity and empowering ideas, its programme is ambitious in scope; its neo-classical backdrop showcases ground-breaking contemporary culture, connecting artists and audiences to new ideas and the people behind them.

Sonic Terrains is a new artist development programme focused on spatial sound developed by Somerset House Studios in collaboration with Studios residents and immersive sound agency Call & Response. This opportunity will provide a transformational experience for five artists to develop expertise in spatial sound and work at the forefront of this new immersive sound technology.

This residency, the first of its kind in the UK, will be open to UK-based sound and music artists within the first 10 years of their practice. No previous experience of spatial sound is required and composition practice can be rooted in any genre. Participants will engage in a bespoke structured programme resulting in five new commissions that will premiere as part of the third edition of ASSEMBLY, Somerset House Studios’ annual programme celebrating contemporary experimental music in November 2020.
