The Gate Theatre

Jerwood Designers Programme

The Gate has a long-standing reputation as having one of the most versatile studio spaces in London, perfect for emerging designers to explore unlimited possibilities whilst stretching the limited space available.

Since 2001 the Jerwood Designers Programme has given outstanding early career designers the opportunity to hone their skill and work on productions in this unique space.

The Jerwood Designers Programme enables three designers and three design assistants each year to work on a professional production at the Gate, in order to expand their experience, fulfilling demanding design briefs that are encouraged to stretch the potential of its small performance space. They have the chance to work with leading directors and writers working in theatre, supported by the Gate’s in house team, an experience which is invaluable in establishing reputation and contacts. For Design Assistants, this opportunity often allows individuals to gain their first professional credit.

The support which the scheme provides in both nurturing talent and offering the opportunity of practical experience has been instrumental in launching the careers of some of the country’s most exciting theatrical designers including Chloe Lamford, Soutra Gilmour, Tom Scutt, and Rosie Elnile.
