The Tetley

The Tetley Jerwood Commissions

The Tetley is a pioneering centre for contemporary art located in the art deco headquarters of the former Tetley Brewery in Leeds Southbank. Originated by artists, and established by the charity Project Space Leeds, artists remain at the centre of everything it does. The Tetley creates vibrant experiences shaping the art of the future and positively impacting its communities. Commissions for three artists or curators based in the North of England, offering the opportunity to develop a significant body of work or curate a group exhibition, with support of a mentor, a research and development budget, and production resources

The Tetley fulfils a vital role within the Leeds and Yorkshire art scene, offering a public platform alongside outstanding national and international work, often presented in the UK for the first time. It works with artists at a pivotal stage in their careers to enable them to take the next step, and supports curators to develop innovative exhibitions.

The Tetley has created a unique development opportunity for three artists or curators based in the North of England. The three projects were selected from a shortlist of 30 nominated by artists and curators who have deep knowledge of artistic practice in the North of England.

We are delighted to announce the selected artists/curators: Emily Hesse, Samra Mayanja and ROOT-ed Zine

The Tetley Jerwood Commissions will give these three practitioners/collectives the opportunity to develop a significant body of work or curate a group exhibition, with support of a mentor, a research and development budget, production resources and The Tetley’s backing. The programme will enable the selected cohort to transform their practice and reach new networks through developing and realising a high-profile exhibition that marks a significant step-change in their work.
