Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries 2017-19 Closing Event

Chapter Arts, Cardiff

In March 2019, fellows and participating organisations spent 48 hours at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff for the final event in this edition of the Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries programme. The Fellows spent time sharing stories and insights from the last year, as well as their intentions for their careers beyond the programme. There was a panel discussion including Rachel Spooner, Creative Director, Peak, and Vicki Amedume, Artistic Director, Upswing; and Alix Manning-Jones, Cultural Education Producer, Derby Theatres, and  Aaron Wright, Artistic Director, Fierce, who are both alumni of the Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries. They offered their advice about how to make the most out of experiences such as this programme.

The Fellows were joined on the second day by representatives from their host organisations for a networking lunch. The hosts then stayed for a series of workshops where they shared their experiences of how their recruitment and support for their Fellow has impacted on their organisations. We then shared dinner in Cardiff with representatives from Welsh arts organisations including Wales Milennium Centre and Ballet Cymru. The following morning we visited the Survey exhibition at g39, before a final series of workshops with representatives from the Bridge Group.

Jerwood Arts are now working on producing an Ideas Kit on recruitment strategies and selection processes to attract a truly reflective range of employees, freelancers and artists. It will contain practical suggestions on how to support the progression of diverse talent. This will be published, along with the final evaluation report, in the summer.
