Montez Press: Soojin Chang, INTERPENETRATIONS

1h 13m

Soojin Chang

To coincide with their new commission BXBY for the Jerwood/FVU Awards 2022, Soojin Chang presents INTERPENETRATIONS one of the programmes forming part of a special Montez Press Radio broadcast takeover that took place on 23 June 2022.

INTERPENETRATIONS is an attunement to nonhuman and ancestral transmissions within sound. The listener is asked to notice oscillations within their bodies when listening to the following field recordings of ritual music, transmutations of ancestral sounds, contemporary experimental music, and everyday channelings. INTERPENETRATIONS will be sporadically guided through intentions to reflect on the psychic dynamics of sonic transmission and listening as a way to renegotiate ethics, performances of violence and pleasure, and ancestral longings.

This episode includes conversations between Soojin Chang with their collaborators Georgie Rei-n Lo and Sam Karugu.

Soojin Chang works in a process of trance, dissociation, feedback, and self-recognition to create performances that dissolve personhood and objecthood through animist and phenomenological methodologies. Their works take the form of moving image, live performance, ritual practice and field research. Using her body as technology to transmute in/visibility, Chang’s practice reflects on contemporary ethics, colonial inheritance, and trans-species reliances.

Sam Karugu is a guitarist and producer, he is member of the critically acclaimed band Duma.

Georgie Rei-n Lo is an artist, DJ, sage and Daoist practitioner.

Montez Press Radio is an experimental broadcasting and performance platform. They were founded in 2018 with the goal of fostering greater experimentation and conversation between artists, writers, and thinkers.
