Sadé Mica and Shenece Oretha nominated for Arts Foundation Futures Awards 2022

Survey II artists Sadé Mica and Shenece Oretha have been selected alongside Rhea Dillon and Libita Sibungu from a long list of nominated artists as finalists for the £10,000 Arts Foundation Futures Award 2022 for Visual Arts.

The award supports artists working in any area of the visual arts including installation, sculpture, film, photography, sound, painting and cross art-form practice. The AFFA 2022 Visual Arts Judges are Visual Artist, Oreet Ashery; Director of Tate St Ives, Anne Barlow; and Director of Aesthetica, Cherie Federico, who says:

“The Arts Foundation Futures Awards 2022 supports and celebrates artists for both their work to date and future development. The recipient of the £10,000 award for Visual Arts will be announced along with awards in four other artforms (Animation, Materials Innovation, Music for Change, and Theatre-Makers) at a celebration event in late January 2022 – with all finalists receiving £1,000 awards towards their artistic practice.”

Sadé Mica and Shenece Oretha will present their commissions for Survey II at Site Gallery, Sheffield from 12 March 2022. Survey II is a major touring exhibition led by Jerwood Arts that presents new commissions by ten of the most outstanding early-career artists in the UK. It spans a breadth of disciplines including photography, sculpture, sound, textile, film and installation, providing a distinctive snapshot of current artistic concerns and approaches. Survey II launched at g39 in Cardiff (3 July – 11 September 2021) before travelling to Jerwood Arts in London (1 October – 11 December 2021) and Site Gallery in Sheffield (12 March – 5 June 2022).

The exhibition explores a wide range of subjects, but at its core is a common preoccupation with how we relate to each other and the world around us. The artists consider the balance of control between humans and nature; the representation of queer and marginalised bodies; and the possibility of transformation for both materials and beings. Many works reflect on our relationships with those closest to us, asking where we find points of connection, when we are performing for each other and how we can capture moments of vulnerability and love. Others look at the formation of memory; how we archive and record to create collective touchpoints, or how we can explore diasporic memory through surface, sound and absence.

Other exhibiting artists are Saelia Aparicio, Tereza Červeňová, Rebecca Moss, Cinzia Mutigli, Katarzyna Perlak, Tako Taal, Nicolaas van de Lande and Angharad Williams.

Other nominees across the Arts Foundation Futures Awards categories include Jerwood alumni Savinder Bual (Jerwood Bursaries), Hannah Tuuliki (Magnetic North) and Eliza Shaddad (Live Work Fund).
