Jon Opie

Deputy Director

I have two main areas of responsibility. On the one hand, I oversee the financial management and operations of Jerwood Arts, providing a range of support so our team and trustees can do their jobs, and artists and arts organisations can get paid on time. On the other, I play a key role in developing Jerwood Arts’ grant making practices, and support Lilli in building effective partnerships with other organisations and funders.

I have worked for Jerwood Arts since January 2011 and over this time have supported two Directors to develop and modernise the strategy to become a more effective grant maker. We have changed enormously and yet the real joy has been the ever-present, laser-like focus on artists’ experiences and needs. I have particularly enjoyed playing a leading role in programmes such as Jerwood Compton Poetry Fellowships and the 14-18NOW Commissions, and collaborating to shape experimental approaches to independent funding, such as the 1:1FUND, Live Work Fund and Jerwood Developing Artists Fund.

My work for Jerwood Arts is complemented by my role as Trustee for Cardboard Citizens Theatre Company, where I am fortunate to support an inspirational team who work with people who have experienced homelessness, poverty and inequity.

I was previously Administrator for the Independent Theatre Council (2008-10) and Development Assistant/Manager for Hampstead Theatre (2006-2008). Before that I worked in libraries across London and as an usher in the West End before/while doing a MA in Arts Administration and Cultural Policy at Goldsmiths College.

I’ve lived in London my whole life. I also have deep roots in Cornwall and try to spend as much time there as possible.
